Help on Searching the U.S. Database of Completed Regulatory Agency Reviews...
How to Search:

You may search this database by selecting from a pick list as shown in most of the boxes, or by entering more specific information into the "Event" or "Keyword" boxes, as shown below:

Search Criteria
Common Name
Select the common name of the crop for which you are seeking information from the list provided.

Scientific Name
Select the scientific name of the crop for which you are seeking information from the list provided.

Trait Category
Select  trait categories describing the expression of the gene(s) of interest from the list provided.

Applicant

Select a name of a company, developer, or sponsor who submitted the product(s) for review from the list provided.

Event

Enter an event designation in this box.  An event designation is the designation for the genetic line resulting from the gene insertion event (that is, from the original introduction of genetic material into the plant via genetic engineering).

Trait Description:

Enter keywords (e.g. trait description such as physical characteristics or the name of the specific protein inserted (for example, Cry1Ab) or tradenames) in this box.

Pick from the appropriate list, or enter a simple search term into the boxes provided.  If you enter more than one field search criteria, the query will retrieve all the products that match all terms.  For example, if you enter Common Name=Corn and Applicant = Monsanto Company, then the search function will retrieve only those records for corn produced by Monsanto Company

In general, the more boxes you fill with terms, the more specific results returned from the search.  If your search does not return as many records as expected, try entering fewer or less specific criteria.  For example, if you type the word "Cry1Ab: in the Keyword box, the database will retrieve records with the protein Cry1Ab.  However if you type "Cry" in the Keyword box, the search will return records on all Cry proteins.  Similarly, if you select Cotton in the Common Name box and the Name Monsanto in the Applicant box, the search will retrieve fewer records than if only the Common Name=Cotton was selected.

How to Read the Search Results

The search results will show records that include columns as follows:

Unique Identifier

This column contains an alphanumeric code assigned by the applicant to the product according to guidelines developed in 2002 by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD Guidelines).  This field may be blank because developers may not have assigned unique identifiers to products developed before implementation of guidelines for Unique Identifiers or to products that were never commercialized.
Common Name/ Scientific Name
This column contains both common and scientific names for the product. In some instances, a review may apply only to a particular subgroup of the crop plant (e.g., field corn but not sweet corn).

Trait Category

This column contains a general description of the type of introduced trait. The trait listed here will be one or more of those found in the pick list of the database search box, e.g., insect resistance.

Applicant

This column contains the name of the company, developer, or sponsor who originally submitted the product for review. The applicant may or may not be the current owner or marketer of the product.

Event

This column contains the designation for the genetic line derived from the insertion of genetic material into the plant genome via genetic engineering, i.e., the “transformation event.”

Trait Description

This column contains specific details about the traits introduced into the product beyond what is listed in the Trait Category. For example, while the trait category column might show that the product displays insect resistance, this column may show the specific type of resistance (e.g., lepidopteran), the protein providing such resistance (e.g., Cry1F), and the donor organism (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis (BT).

Reviewed  Uses within the U.S.

This column describes the type of reviews that have been completed in the United States. Specifically, a listing of

"Food" means that:
  • FDA has completed a review for consumption by humans; and
  • If the product is a plant that contains a plant-incorporated protectant (PIP), EPA has completed review of the PIP.
"Feed" means that:
  • FDA has completed a review for consumption by animals; and
  • If the product is a plant that contains a plant-incorporated protectant (PIP), EPA has completed review of the PIP.
"Planting" means that:
  • USDA-APHIS has completed a review of the product and granted nonregulated status under APHIS biotechnology regulations; and
  • If the product is a plant that contains a plant-incorporated protectant (PIP), EPA has completed review of the PIP.
For some products in the database, EPA has specified certain restrictions or conditions associated with planting. The conditions for each product can be found by clicking on the "More Info" button for that product and then clicking on the links to the EPA Assessment Summary and Registration Label. It is the responsibility of the reader to ascertain the use conditions within the United States of any given product.
